Rambus Lighting Technologies, a world leader in patented lighting innovations, turned to Fogg for the sustainable redevelopment of an existing 40 year old office/warehouse into a world class research and prototype development facility and the very first building in the Midwest U.S. to be entirely illuminated by LED lighting.
The existing 28,000 SF office / warehouse building was constructed in 1971. Over the years it had been leased by Fogg to numerous companies; the most recent tenant was a large bulk pharmacy. While Rambus liked the location, it was difficult for them to imagine how this tired old industrial building could be transformed into the world class R&D facility they had envisioned. Fogg responded by creating a animated virtual tour of the facility (which can be viewed on our Home Page), capturing their imagination and convincing Rambus that the existing building would work.
The combination of existing high bay and low bay spaces worked very well to accommodate the various R&D functions required in this facility. Labs, clean rooms, offices, dark rooms and meeting areas were easily integrated with high bay prototype production areas.
Existing interior finishes were completely replaced with appropriate materials in a consistent palette throughout. For example, the Laser Room and Electronics Lab received a high build anti-static epoxy floor, while reception and conference areas received high-end linear porcelain tile.
Perhaps the most significant aesthetic quality of the building is the combined effect of the LED lighting and the specialty ceiling systems – including the suspended wood ceilings - not only in high profile common areas, but also in lab/production work areas, as well.
The Fogg-Rambus team collaborated throughout the design build process to find solutions to complex systems issues especially in regard to HVAC systems in critical prototype production areas and labs, and in regard to the complete integration of LED lighting components with the Seimens C-Bus controls.
Sustainability was a big driver throughout the design and construction of this project and was a key factor in the selection of an existing facility rather than green design field development for this project. Energy efficiency and performance were also critically important to our client, not only in terms of sustainability, but also to maintain the precise temperature and humidity required for prototype development. The LED lighting system itself offered tremendous energy saving over conventional lighting especially in combination with daylight harvesting and occupancy controls.
Rambus is a major success story for the City of Brecksville and Northeast Ohio in terms of retaining and creating highly skilled research and development jobs in our region in a dynamic, high growth industry.
